What is stress?

Stress is a long-term psychological reaction to extra demanding life circumstances.

A short-term, acute stress reaction is appropriate when you have to perform at your best, but prolonged stress can cause physical and mental problems.

Stress hormones

When stressed, the body produces the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. Through prolonged exposure these stress hormones can damage the body.


Stress caused by changing life circumstances occurs frequently in connection with: Deaths, illness, serious accident, divorce, conflict, family problems, new job, firing, financial problems, increased demands on the job and negative psychological work environment.

Negative stressors are thus triggered essentially of:

  1. Change in life situations (for example at work).
  2. Personal crises (illness, death, etc.)

What can stress lead to?

Serious consequences of prolonged stress are especially:

  1. Cardiovascular disease
  2. Mental disorders (particularly depression).

Other common consequences include among others diabetes, infections (due to reduced immune defences), allergies, ulcers and substance abuse.

Stress symptoms

Stress symptoms can be physical, psychological and behavioural. You may want talk to your friends or partner about how they see you. Respond to symptoms in time and talk to your doctor.
